As women, we’ve been told us we can have it all and be it all. We can work incredible jobs or run our own businesses. We can achieve incredible professional success and have amazing personal lives.
But it’s so much easier said than done, isn’t it?
The truth is, life has gotten far too busy. Between work, family, friends, fun, and everything else, there’s never enough time to do all the things we really want to do. We’re stretched too thin, exhausted, working too much, and feeling guilty that we can’t get more done.
At the same time, we feel like we should be able to do even more. More at home, more at work, more for ourselves… but there’s simply no room to do more.
And to make matters worse, we simultaneously feel like we shouldn’t have to do so much, work so hard, or feel so needy for some self-care. It feels like there’s no way to win!
I want you to know this:
Having professional success and a rich personal life doesn’t have to be so hard.
With just a few simple ideas, you can drastically change how you tackle work and life, without disappointing those you care about most (especially yourself) and without sacrificing the success you want to create.
In bite-sized episodes, you’ll discover how to have a career and life that light you up and that getting there is easier than you think.

Hi Jenny!
I’ve been so eagerly waiting for your podcast to start, so it was a treat to get the first 7 episodes in the mail all at once! I love that the intro is in your own voice, and how short these episodes are! I can’t wait to see where this “year long class” takes us by the end of 2017, but this is a great beginning to the new year. Good Luck with your new venture / adventure 🙂
Charlotte Nuessle says
Hi Jenny,
Just listened to #2. So fits with what I’ve come to understand from almost 60 years on this journey of life.
I look forward to this year of SOYT podcasts – yes- and very much appreciate your modeling, your enthusiasm, and your generosity.
Warmly,
Charlotte
Jenny Shih says
I love that you binged, Saiisha! I’m excited to see where this year-long class will go, too! I’ve finished planning the first 50 episodes, but after that, all I see is wide open space. I know the inspiration and clarity will strike as you all listen, comment, and share. It’s going to be insightful for all of us!
Jenny Shih says
Thank you for listening and for commenting, Charlotte! I hope you continue to enjoy the show all year long. I look for to hearing how it helps you and what insights you have that might help others. Here’s to a great 2017 where women get to live SOYT!
Lily says
Hi Jenny!
I love how bite-sized the podcasts and homework are, and the format of lesson and examples given! It makes it doable and I love the gentle approach. I can feel a foundation slowly building with my answers! I look forward to remainder of the year. Thank you so much!
Jenny Shih says
Awesome, Lily! Thank you so much for sharing. Please let me know if you have any questions or ideas for future episodes; I’m here to serve women like you!
Channing says
Hi Jenny,
I just listened to Episodes 5-9, what a relief! I was having trouble defining exactly what Success means to me, even though my Terms are already pretty clear to me. I am going to try “gentle awareness” and “defining my values” over the next few days and see where it leads me.
I am a big fan of your work, and really looking forward to listening to your podcast and doing the exercises in the year ahead. I really like that the podcast it isn’t specific to entrepreneurs only. Having just become a mother, I am experiencing big changes and working through how I want my life to look, and I am not sure if that means an entrepreneurial or corporate path. Thank you!
Jenny Shih says
This is great, Channing! I’m so glad you are just allowing space and awareness to help you get clear. That can often be the easiest and most effective clarifier!
You’re right about the podcast not being specific to business owners. My goal is to speak to all professional women — those in jobs and those running businesses. A lot of these ideas were ones I effectively used for my 10 years in corporate (as both an employee and a manager), and I hope others will find the helpful as well.
Although not a mother myself, I have heard from several mothers that this has helped them, too, so that you for sharing that. It’s great to know that these concepts can help so many women.
Please spread the word and please leave a review. Both will help get this message out to more women!
Channing says
Hi Jenny,
Episodes 11-16: it was so helpful to hear from other women! Particularly how they discovered/defined their personal key values. I had an ‘aha’ moment hearing them, I understood what you mean by giving myself permission to pick a value that is important to me. Maybe subconsciously I thought that Rest or Peace of Mind wasn’t an acceptable value, but when I heard that someone else prioritized that and fit their other values within that, it made me feel like it was OK for me to have as a value too! Also I could really relate when Lauren in E015 said sometimes giving herself Peace of Mind meant doing things she didn’t like to do. I agree!
So after a week or so of gentle awareness I came to Peace of Mind as my one of my top priorities and was able to “layer” many of my other important values within that. Fun is my other top priority 🙂
Now I will start tracking my time!
Thank you!
Jenny Shih says
This makes my day! I’m so glad you got so much out of those stories, and I’m thrilled you’re tracking your time. Yay!!!
Charlotte Nuessle says
You touched on 2 things that resonate with me. One is about giving myself permission. Boy I still need to give myself permission to believe in myself. The other is talking it out with friends. I’m curious how I can grow this more, developing more collegial relationships. I’m bringing this into my gentle awareness, something integral in my daily living. Warmly and best!
Jenny Shih says
These make me smile so much, Charlotte. Thank you for sharing! Permission to believe in yourself — consider this your permission slip! And talking it out with friends sounds lovely.
Way to approach it with gentle awareness. Well done 🙂

I love your podcasts Jenny and left a review on my laptop version but don’t see it posted yet. Wondering if it might take some time or if I need to do it over. hugs Karen
Jenny Shih says
THANK YOU, Karen! I appreciate you taking the time to subscribe and leave a review! It does take a few days for iTunes to approve the review. I’ll be on the lookout.
Thanks again!
Shari Broder says
I love this podcast. You give out small bites that people can use without adding to their overwhelm. Not quite as fantastic as working with you in MIWO, but it’s a taste (you can tell I’m a weight coach with all the food analogies!) of your winning approach. Thanks!
Jenny Shih says
THANK YOU, Shari! I’m thrilled you’re enjoying the bite-sized ideas. Thank you for saying so, and thank you for leaving a review on iTunes. I really appreciate it!
Lucy Parsons says
Hi Jenny, I love the podcast and am happy to say I already use some form of the strategies you all about. I’m looking for the resources / books you mentioned in episode 46 and can’t find the show notes. Can you point me in the right direction? Many thanks.
Jenny Shih says
Hi Lucy! You can find the links in the show notes. If you’re in the podcast app on your phone, click the picture of me and it will flip to showing you the show notes. Links are always included there. If you’re on a different device, let me know, and we’ll figure out how you can access the show notes on that device.

Hi Jenny,
I just left a review at iTunes. But since I am in Germany I don’t know if it will be visible soon. So maybe you and other people here would like to know what I think about SOYT.
Here it is…
“**Jenny Shih nails it!**
In a slow but steady progress she shows exactly how you can get Success On Your Terms (SOYT) – and create a life exactly as you want to it to be.
Jenny Shih offers a totally free online course in form of a podcast. But please, if you really want to profit start with No. 1 and follow her steps. Each episode is just a few minutes long. So you’ll have enough time to try what she suggests. It’s a great experience with much more in it than is obvious.
Learn all about gentle awareness and getting your stuff done – in the best possible way for YOU.
Jenny has a great way to connect the dots.
In one of the earlier episodes she told about fighting reality. I thought that’s interesting but none of my business. Only now at Episode 55 I fully understood what she meant and that I also fight reality from time to time.
It’s her gentle approach to repeat what’s important that makes me grasp the message and recognize my own struggles. And – what’s more important – find a way to handle it.”
Jenny Shih says
Oh my goodness WOW! Thank you so much, Astrid! Sometimes iTunes displays reviews by country, meaning you can only see them if you’re in that country, so I really appreciate you taking time to share it here.
I’m glad that you’re finding so much value in the episodes. That is my goal!
Thanks again, and wishing you continued success on your terms. xo

Hi, Jenny! I don’t remember now how I found out about you but I’m thrilled that I did! I’ve been listening to every single podcast and just love your down to earth and easy-going delivery style! And the information you share seems to be almost exactly what I need to hear! For instance, early on you discussed being gently aware of what is going on internally without judgement in order to move forward. That was quite the eye-opener. I really appreciate the fact that each podcast is only several minutes long but they’re packed with boatloads of solid and immediately-actionable advice. I plan on listening to you as long as you keep podcasting! Thanks for everything, Jenny. You are a one in a million.
Jenny Shih says
THANK YOU, Cheryl. You just made my day!!
I’m beyond thrilled for you that the podcast is helping you in your life with what you need, and I’m so grateful that you took the time to post that comment here. To know that the show is out there changing lives, just a few minutes at a time, is what motivates me to keep at it.
Thank you, and if you wouldn’t mind adding that review to iTunes, I’d so greatly appreciate it. Thank you again!

HI Jenny!
I really LOVE the podcast and look forward to listening each day. In response to your question about systems. Do you have a system you use for planning your day, week, month? I’d love to see what that looks like.
Thanks!
Marissa
Jenny Shih says
Thank you for the suggestion! Can you tell me more about why you want a system for that? Or what you’re struggling with that you think this will help?
The more you can tell me, the more I can create an answer just for you. Thank you!
Cheryl Wiest says
Hey, Jenny! Just finished listening to episode 081 (How do your turn your brain off?). I have a really tough time, too, turning off my mind. What works for me is giving my mind something else besides work to think about. Deep-breathing or an exercise called “Progressive Muscle Relaxing” and listening to music work for me – either one or the other but not at the same time!
It may take some conscious effort on your part to keep your mind focused on either but, if you give it time, your brain will acclimate. Also, during those times when my mind keeps hopping back to thoughts about work, I simply honor its attempt and gently bring my focus back to the activity I want to engage in…deep breathing or listening to music (a couple of my favorites are smooth jazz and Gregorian chant, believe it or not). Hope that helps!!
Jenny Shih says
Thank you so much, Cheryl! I appreciate you taking the time to share your insights. I’m so grateful!

Hi Jenny! I love your podcast and the one about emotions when striving is hitting home today. I was finishing up a couple of projects and starting your new Make It Work OnLine program so I can restart and redirect my coaching program. I woke up at 2:45am thinking about things and although I considered getting up and working, I decided to stay in bed and go back to sleep because I knew that is what I really needed! When this happens, my emotions (tears and anger) run high and I know it’s stress and lack of sleep. That’s my signal to stop and focus on something else that takes my total attention. My favorite thing is to spend time with my horses and yes, total focus is needed when playing with a 1000lb animal. If I can’t do that, I call my nieces or nephews and get involved in their teen drama which is so important to them now but they will not remember next week. Haha! It is a good reminder to me that, I too, am creating my own drama so it’s time to lighten up! P.S. Your makeup looks great!
Jenny Shih says
This is awesome, Donna! I’m so glad that your awareness during moments like this is strong. Well done! It’s wonderful having you in the workshop, and thank you for the comment about my makeup – LOL!

Just left you a review Jenny, I’m sorry it took so long. I really love your podcast and listen every day! I get a lot of value and inspiration from it.
Cheers, Emily

Thank you, Emily! I appreciate it! And please pass along the thanks to your son as well 😉

Oh my god, the boundary podcasts with Jess Ryan were amazing! LOVE this and it’s something I can use and also use to help my clients. Thank you so much Jenny. Love your podcast.
Jenny Shih says
Yay! So glad you enjoyed them. Jess is amazing!!

Hi Jenny,
I just listened to your most recent podcast! As a daily follower I will definitely miss that bit of daily inspiration. I’m an aspiring entrepreneur and coach and I can not tell you how immensely I have benefitted from the SWOS free class and the podcast. I’ve admired your energy, enthusiasm and the tools you use to help others (for me, they are all spiritual and mindfulness tools applied to business). I’m going to miss listening. On the other hand, I admire your decision to honor your own needs and what is best for you rather than going forward when something feels off. I think all of us have to find the courage to try to do what is right for our own selves, and that can be hard once we make a big commitment to others. Throughout these past months of listening, what has resonated most with me has been your personal stories and how you came to the realizations you came to. It’s inspired me to try and remember the importance of being honest and build that into the future projects that I am aspiring to. Despite not being a well kept secret on iTunes (as you say), this podcast had (and has) immense value. My deepest thanks.

Just listened to your podcast about taking a break – kudos! I’m finding it takes some practice to get used to listening to my gut, and need constant reminders–like this one!
Selfishly, with you taking a break, I can finally catch up on your episodes I haven’t listened to yet!
Happy break!

Hi Jenny – I LOVED today’s podcast. As a life-long worry wart I recently started to think that my worry was more of a habit. This podcast really confirmed that it probably is! I’d love to hear more strategies to help change this habit. 🙂
Jenny Shih says
I’m so glad the idea clicked with you, Marissa! It can be a game-changer! Today (at the beach!) I identified three more emotions I can get into addiction mode with. Time to acknowledge and detach. Have fun changing your habit! <3
jill wolk says
Hi Jenny, I just listened to podcast on Emotional Addiction and YES! you are so on target. We all create our own stories and if we are telling a story of anxiety, worry, overwhelm, lack, or whatever it is we default to that is exactly what we will create. The good news is that we can shift our limiting beliefs and choices we make and create the story we are wanting to live.
Getting to the root of why we tell the story of anxiety, or whatever it is, is the key to freeing ourselves. Jill
Jenny Shih says
Yes!!!
Shari Broder says
Hi Jenny! So glad you’re back because maybe I have an addiction to your coaching! I miss you and it!
I loved the episode about emotional addiction. I hope you will continue to talk about it because the concept of needing certain negative feelings is a good one and it resonated with me, yet so many of us miss how we are the cause and need to learn how we can change that. I think of it as a habit. We get in a habit of overscheduling, of feeling too busy (which some people think is trendy), of being overwhelmed, and it is destructive and not useful, and needs to be addressed.
Despite using the word “addiction” above, I really don’t think it is helpful for most people to think of themselves as having an addiction to things. As a weight loss coach, I have clients who say, “I’m addicted to sugar” or “I’m addicted to sweets.” Regardless of whether such addictions really exist, I think a lot of people use those terms to give up their power. “I can’t help it–I’m addicted to sweets!” So I don’t like to use that term for that reason. Take back your power! Thanks!
Jenny Shih says
That’s not an addiction; coaching with me is a smart business move! 🙂
What did you think of Episode 124’s reframe on calling it a habit?
Sam Semako says
Jenny, I love your podcast. I love the music intro and outro!
Simple, short and actionable ideas.
