My Journey Here
I started out in corporate America, managing multi-million dollar projects spanning four continents and overseeing dozens—and sometimes hundreds—of team members.
While my peers had become increasingly overwhelmed and stressed out, working 60-plus hours a week, I refused to let the same thing happen to me.
I experimented with time management, efficiency, and delegation techniques so I could have a life outside my job. In the process, I learned to manage my staff, get my work done, and handle big projects in 40 hours a week… or less.
I got more done with less stress, less chaos, and almost zero overwhelm. I even had time to do mid-day yoga, leave early on Fridays, and sneak out for lunch dates with my husband. I enjoyed finding ways to get more done in less time, and I still love this kind of challenge.
But after 10 years in the corporate world, I knew I needed to find something more rewarding and personally fulfilling. After a few years of soul searching, I decided to train with Martha Beck and Byron Katie so I could launch a life coaching business for people stuck in jobs that made them miserable.
And in June of 2009, I did just that. I quit my six-figure corporate job and started my life coaching business.
Sounds like the perfect fit, right?
The Struggle Before Success
When I started my business, I felt a tremendous amount of pressure to succeed. As the household breadwinner, I felt I had no room to fail, and I was terrified every day that my business wouldn’t make it. But despite the fear, I worked tenaciously to build my business.
To support myself financially during this time (and to feed my love of learning), I also worked as a virtual assistant for a handful of experienced life coaches while still trying to grow my own coaching business. I was determined not to go back to my job, and I did what I had to do to pay the bills today and also grow my business for the future.
Things Started to Click
Eventually I found myself coaching my virtual assistant clients around their businesses. I realized I was not only good at it, I enjoyed it a heck of a lot more than life coaching!
My life coaching business taught me what was required to be an online entrepreneur: running a business, finding and marketing to potential clients, and pulling it all off without compromising my mental and emotional well-being.
As a virtual assistant, I learned about online technology and customer service. Plus I saw how my corporate skills of project management, time management, team leadership, and delegation all fit within this entrepreneurial model.
Put it all together, and I found my sweet spot!
When I realized this was my new path, I closed down my life coaching practice, regrouped, and launched jennyshih.com, offering virtual assistant and project management services plus coaching to make your ideas happen. I immediately knew I was on the right track, even though I still had a lot more to learn.
Everything got easier when I dove in head first to learn more about business and marketing. My business quickly took off, I was loving my work, and the thought of going back to my job had faded completely. Within three years, I was taking in multi-six-figures in revenue with very high profit margins.
All in all, I couldn’t have asked for more. Except…
I Got Terribly Ill
As jennyshih.com was ramping up, my health began tumbling fast.
Now I know what you’re thinking: I was burning the candle at both ends and overdoing it like most entrepreneurs.
Nothing could be further from the truth. I was averaging 25 hour work weeks, spending plenty of time outdoors, exercising, and eating well. So it took awhile for me to catch on that my declining health was something more than just new business jitters.
After extreme fatigue, debilitating body pain, and incessant brain fog nearly brought me to my knees, plus nine more months of chasing doctors and diagnoses, I finally had an answer: I had Lyme disease.
Unfortunately, a diagnosis doesn’t mean an instant cure, and it took me over a year of getting worse before I started to get better, and another year to recover to 70% health. All the while, as the household breadwinner, I kept running my business, serving clients, and giving every drop of energy to those who put their trust in me.
Thankfully, I consider myself 90% better today and still improving, day by day.
Where I Am Today
Taking everything I learned from each step along the way, I now help my clients build businesses that support the lives they want for themselves.
Whether you want to build your email list, turn your fledgling business into a “real” business and start making money, or consistently make $10k/month, I can help.
I love business and strategy more than I ever imagined I would, and I can’t think of a more perfect business for my strengths, talents, superpowers, and passions than what I have now.
It blows my mind when I sit back and think about what I’ve created for myself. I get to decide when I work, who I work with, and what I do every single day. It doesn’t get much better than this.
I’m so grateful for my journey — even the illness — but I had to learn a lot of things the hard way. The good news? With me in your corner, you can skip the struggle and jump right to what works.
My Mission
