Today I am going to let you in on a secret. I’m going to tell you the best business decision I made last year.
This one decision had a huge, positive impact on my business. My income, list, fan base, and confidence all grew as a result of this decision. I can honestly say that I would not be where I am today if I had chosen differently.
As a business owner, I know that you’re always looking to make smart decisions for your business. Sometimes they work out; sometimes they don’t.
In today’s video, I will tell you the best decision I made last year and how you can be sure you’re making the right decisions for your business.
As I mentioned in the video, I chose to invest in myself and my business in the one area I where I needed the most help. Tweet that!

Hi Jenny — as a fellow b-schooler I agree — b-school rocks and is worth the investment. A year into my business, I am looking forward to mapping out some new goals and going through b-school again (as alumni we are b-schoolers for life!).
Jenny Shih says
Aw, true B-school love! Thanks for being here, Marissa!
Can’t wait to see what you cook up this year!
Molly Fisk says
Nice video, Jenny (and I love that blue shirt!). I like the way the lineage of coaching goes on: you learn from someone and then synthesize it for your clients, and they synthesize what they get from you for their own clients… a nice chain of learning and teaching.
The best business decision I’ve made so far this year was to paint my office. Sounds a little silly, but when I get in here the colors put me into such a good mood that I know it’s affecting my performance: I’m calmer, more confident, more optimistic, and I keep the place neater so I know I’m more efficient. The colors (a light spicy coral and a blue-ish gray) help remind me that this is ME here, not some generic coach, and they reinforce my connection to my intuition. I think there’s also a little boost of self-respect, too: I cared enough about my environment to stop everything, shell out some money, get friends to help, and make the office EXACTLY the way I wanted it. I know I’m an intensely aesthetic person, and I’m giving myself the nourishment and support that kind of person needs.
Jenny Shih says
I love this, Molly! What a great example of caring for yourself and taking care of what you really need based on what matters to you. Thanks for sharing!
Sara says
I LOVE this too, Molly!! I am the same way. My biz partner and I started our business early this year and I never cared enough about the office/closet in my apartment to do anything about it. I’m moving across the country in a month and you better believe that my new office space will be aesthetically pleasing! Thanks for the inspiration!
Jenny, I’m SO happy to hear that B-School was the best for you! I just started it and am so eager to see what is waiting to unfold!
Best to you both,
Sara
Alison Elissa Horner says
I love the concept that investing in myself is good for business!
One distinction to add would be that sometimes there’s a lack of knowledge and other times there’s a lack of follow through. I think investing in a program is more appropriate for the former (when you don’t know what to do).
When you do know the steps to take, but aren’t taking them, it seems time and money would be better spent on implementation. A program will only help you if you follow through and try out the ideas that you’ve learned.
Jenny Shih says
Great distinction, Ali! Investment in programs are great… if we follow through. That’s a totally fair point! Thanks for commenting here!
Aradia says
I have to agree wholeheartedly! I have an acquaintance that went through a program I did and reported they got nothing out of it…but I know for a fact we both took different approaches to the information & training that was put out.
I find personally when I can get the information I need I can motivate myself to do it, when I don’t know, or can’t discern truly useful information (from personal searches & research) is when I have the most trouble.
Grace says
Jenny,
What specifically was it at B-School that helped you?
Jenny Shih says
A lot of things helped me last year, Grace. B-School was one of the biggest things. It is an incredible program.
Hanna Cooper says
So far, the best business decision I made this year was to take your class and work with you Jenny! I”m off the fence with my marketing and doing things I thought I couldn’t do or would have to pay someone else a lot of money to do for me. rock on!
Jenny Shih says
Oh, Hanna! You make me blush!
Thanks for your kind words. I’m saving that comment in my “keeper” folder for when I need a boost.
I’m so thrilled for you and the progress you’ve made. It’s been fun to watch. Keep it up!
Aradia says
Whenever I get antsy about pulling money together I remind myself that an investment in myself is never a waste of time or resources.
That being said I am dying to get into B-school. It sounds spectacular!
Aradia says
Well I’ve heard of B-school (as I noted before) and it sounds even more like something I need to get into.
I think for me finally getting some one on one coaching time was super helpful. Not only did I get coaching, but I got it from the perspective of an artist too. While I knew a lot of what I needed to do I couldn’t focus long enough to even start or prioritize what I needed to do. I also had a hard time being sure whether I should do something or not.
Jenny Shih says
Coaching is perfect for that, Aradia. I’m so glad you invested in yourself!
B-school was phenomenal and I can’t wait for the program to launch again. Stay tuned because as soon as it is, I know I’ll be offering another affiliate bonus 🙂
