I have something important to ask you today.
Why are you in business? I mean, why are you really in business?
In the past year as my business has been really taking off, I continue to circle back to the reason I started my own business. As I’ve talked to other successful entrepreneurs, I find they have the same reason for being in business.
In today’s very unconventional video (full of bloopers!), I share with you THE reason many successful entrepreneurs are in business. I bet it’s not what you think.
Click to TweetWe create our businesses so we can create the lives we want.I want to hear from you! In the comments below, tell me…
1. What is one thing you want to do in your life that gets you excited?
2. What is one action step you can take to move toward that goal?
Djanira says
Looks like you girls were having a lot of fun there Jenny!
That’s exactly how I want my business to be, FUN whilst helping others.
1 – travel gets me excited
2- one action step would be to have that in mind when hesitating to reach out to bloggers offering to guest post for them
BTW I had my first ‘transitioning to veggie’ client recently, in our follow up session last week he told me that our work together had changed his life and he was so much happier and healthier for it 😀
Jenny Shih says
We had so much fun, Djanira, it was pretty amazing! I love that you have a similar vision for your business: fun!
Guest posting for bloggers who serve your target audience is a great way to grow your business and get the word out about your work. Great action step.
Congrats on your first veggie client and their rave review (I’m not surprised!). Yay!!!!
Djanira says
Thanks Jenny!

Great video. one thing that I intend to create for my life is traveling and gaining inspiration from the new things around me. I love new cultures, governments, systems, people, languages, etc who bring my senses to life. Even my taste buds get inspired! Anyways, I love when I feel my senses come alive. I travel and learn from where I am. Taking what works and noting it (and bringing that back home).
One step I can take is creating a team of mentors. I do not know how to do it and I look for wisdom instead of trying to do it all on my own, goodness that never really works. Its nice to have support along the way. And even nicer when I can be that mentor for others 🙂
Jenny Shih says
Great vision, and great next steps plan, Sandy!
Not sure how to find a team of mentors? Start by listing the areas where you need mentoring. Examples could be personal development, marketing, speaking, business brainstorming, whatever! Then, start seeking people that can fill those gaps for you. You may not even need to pay them. Simply reading their blogs and following them on social media may help. If you have a big gap, consider hiring someone to help you close that gap. It’s amazing what a little professional help can do to catapult you and your business forward.
Sandy Galiano says
Thanks for the advice Jenny. I took your advice and am subscribing to a few more websites to hear what others have to offer. Really want to gain clarity in the next few months. 🙂
Jenny Shih says
So glad it helped, Sandy. Start cyber-stalking (gently, of course!). Find people that close your gaps. Notice who you like and jive with and who you don’t resonate with. Your mentors will come!

Coolest video ever 🙂 Totally made my day! Thanks Jen 🙂
As for my action step…
Well, I want to write books. Lots and lots of books.
And one book I want to write while I am in Costa Rica and Panama – on a working holiday. Yes! 🙂
2013? Bring it!
Jenny Shih says
I’m so glad you said so! My tendency is to go all professional but this one sprung up mid-swim, and my friend Kristen was a doll to grab her iPhone and record me right then and there.
As for you… get writing! I see you in Costa Rica and Panama…. 🙂

That was so inspirational. I am about to become unemployed through no fault of my own. The universe is actually giving me what I want but that doesn’t make me any less scared etc. It’s now my time to make the ULTIMATE leap of faith.
Jenny Shih says
It is totally scary to be forced to take the leap. When I was back in corporate and lots of folks were getting laid off, it was scary for everyone. Since then, the ones that have truly thrived were the ones that embraced the new change and used it as an opportunity to really go after what they wanted in their lives. When I see those people now, they say that leaving their job was one of the best things that ever happened for them. That can be true for you, too!

Jenny!
How did I miss being in that video! I can attest (as I was there!) that so much business brainstorming, love, deep sharing and caring occurred that week that rocked our worlds and left us full of life, love and killer business strategies for 2013.
This is what life is all about!
Thanks for sharing Jenny!

It was Monday around 4 pm, Jill. Were you in the spa? It was an unplanned, spur-of-the-moment thing. It would have been fun to have all of us there but that may have gotten a little too rowdy!
Yes, this is what life (and business) are all about!
ANA MATAMOROS says
Totally inspirational video 🙂
Next year I will be selling my products in Amazon, and that will be my BIG LEAP
xox,

Jenny Shih says
Awesome, Ana! Can’t wait to see them up there!
Nathalie Lussier says
You are hilarious! I can feel the splash from over here. 😉
And the splash I’m referring to is more people doing business like you, and building a life they love. Ahhmazing!
Jenny Shih says
Nothing like a week in the sunshine to bring out my playful, silly side. Well, that plus some girlfriends 🙂
I know you, too, Nath are building a life you love with a business you love. You are an inspiration, my friend!
Amy says
This is so fun! Loved it! I vow to show up everyday for my dreams. Every. Day. xoxo -a
Jenny Shih says
Wish you could have been there, too, Amy!
I believe you when you say you will show up ever day for your dreams. You totally do.
Oliver Tausend says
Hi Jenny,
lovely video. Who wouldn’t want to be on such a business trip? Business doesn’t have to boring. If we’re not having fun doing what we’re doing, why doing it in the first place?
To me, it boils down to the question: Do you live to work or do you work to live?
Best,
Oliver
Jenny Shih says
I wholeheartedly agree with everything you say, Oliver!!!
Jenna Dalton says
I love it!
Just getting back from vacation myself, I appreciate your enthusiasm and honest love for what you do. It’s truly inspiring and it gives me a boost to get back to it and make my dreams come true 🙂
Jenny Shih says
Woo-hoo!! Happy to boost your own excitement for what you do, Jenna!
Hope you had a great vacation, too!

Oh Jenny you nailed it!!! That is exactly the reason I started my new company. I sold my previous business in 2010 and then set about designing and planning a business I can run from anywhere in the world. So thank you for the reminder.
There are soooo many actions I am taking this year but I think persisting daily with the little things despite what I feel like is important. Plus pulling in some amazing talent to complement my skills is vital.
Have an awesome week. I’ll add joining you girls for a business fun week to my bucket list!
Belinda
Jenny Shih says
Keep at it, Belinda, and focus on your big reason for being in business, and you will get there!
