I have a confession to make: Most of the time I take life way too seriously.
I’m better at handling the serious, important things than I am at embracing moments of lightness and joy.
Though this has served me well in some areas of my life, overall it’s a stressful place to live full-time.
When I felt myself going too far down the path of super seriousness a few weeks ago, I knew I needed an intervention. So I grabbed a friend and headed to Disneyland for a few days.
In today’s super short video, I’m diving into how entrepreneurship can be a trap for the all-to-serious…. or it can be the freedom you’ve always longed for.
Don’t let the crown fool you.
Remember why you created your business in the first place! Tweet that!
Now, I’d love to hear from you!
Why are you in business? What do you most want to create in your life by having this business?
Do you ever get caught up in taking life or business too seriously? What do you do to get out of that loop?
I can’t wait to hear your stories in the comments below!

That was so funny Jenny! I loved when you forgot what else you had to say. Thanks for the reminder about fun!

It was funny at the time, too, probably because I was so busy taking things un-seriously that it didn’t matter! 🙂

Hilarious! I want a crown! I totally get this. I started my business so I could stay home with my daughter, and I have to remind myself every so often…when she wants to play with me, but I feel pulled to work…that I’m doing this business so that I can be her full-time momma.
Jenny Shih says
You can totally get your own crown. Target, baby! My friend picked them up. They’re designed for little kid’s heads, but you can stretch ’em to make them work. And the best part about wearing a crown in Disneyland is that all of the cast members address you as princess or your highness. Now that was fun!

So hilarious and such a good point. Time for some fun.

So funny! I love this. Yes, I decided that today I won’t work. At least not very seriously. I had already a nice walk with my boyfriend and rest of the day I’m planning to do nothing or anything that feels not-work to me. I know, it’s Wednesday, but here in Finland July is generally vacation month, so I can give myself a little break. Love this video!
Jenny Shih says
Good for you!! It is totally okay to not work or not work seriously now and then. I mean, that’s the whole point of having our own businesses!
Kate says
Thank you Jenny! After driving myself really hard (into the ground) there couldn’t have been a better day for the evil queen to land in my inbox! You really struck a chord about remembering WHY and making the most of every day of the journey.
After watching this I’m going to do two things differently. I am going to consciously call myself when I’m feeling guilty about all the millions of things I want to get done/ not having it all figured out and done already!
Secondly I am going to stop and appreciate all the little lifestyle moments that I already have. Like being able to stop in my favourite coffee shop for a shot of espresso. I’m going to look at them as five to fifteen minute time outs…
Jenny Shih says
Kate – I love your clarity, honesty, and action plan. Fantastic! Yes, drop the guilt and appreciate what you’ve created. After all, YOU CREATED IT! And how awesome is that?!!
Allison Crow says
Such a good reminder to PLAY ~ that has been a theme lately! and that is 2 times in the last week I’ve heard this “Don’t take yourself so seriously.” Looking forward to some play and fun in Portland TOMORROW ! Wahoooooooo
Jenny Shih says
You were my inspiration for this video, Allison! When you said to me something along the lines of, “Just because I’m not working doesn’t mean I’m not successful,” it sparked the reminder for myself that not working is often a great sign of success! So this one’s for you!
Nathalie Lussier says
I looove seeing you having fun Jenny! It brings out such a special part of you and you just shine! 🙂

Haha that was so funny! I love the message too, especially that I’m just starting out and need to remember why I’m doing it always! Thanks Jenny! Hope you had a blast!
Jenny Shih says
Yes, always remember!
Cat says
I loved that video! I have been getting a bit too serious lately. I started making a weekly plan so then I actually can reach a point when I am done for the day, which is better than before, although it involves more planning 🙂 Today though I am going shopping. Wooo hooo!! (for a dress for my photo shoot). Glad you had fun at Disneyland!
Jenny Shih says
More planning = more freedom!!!
Jennifer Kennedy says
I’m in the beginning stages of my business, and I already feel the pull of taking things too seriously. Obviously, to a certain extent that’s necessary!! But, I’ve been getting crazy to the point where if I’m not working, I think something is wrong!
Thanks for the reminder to relax and enjoy!! I may just need to take a trip to Disneyland, too! (Especially since it’s only 25 minutes from my house!)
Jenny Shih says
Sometimes it’s true — if we aren’t working, we could be distracting ourselves or wasting time. But often, if we aren’t working, it’s because we’re listening to our bodies, our intuition, and the little kid inside that say “have some fun!!” Be sure to wear your princess crown when you head to Disneyland! Then you really feel like a kid!
Alicia says
Hilarious! Thanks for the reminder, Jenny. I love that you just took off to Disneyland…
I’m going to carry this message with me the whole time I’m in Portland this week. Looking forward to seeing you there!! (Psst…bring your crown!) 🙂
Jenny Shih says
You’ve done a great job incorporating this idea into your life recently, that’s for sure! And it’s been fun to watch!
Adrianne Munkacsy says
Yes!!! This was so natural, Jenny, I loved it. Out of all the videos I’ve seen, I feel like this one really captures you the best.
