No matter what kind of business you want to create or grow, there are four unavoidable pieces you must have in place.
These four pieces aren’t just for newbies, either. They’re essential components of business creation and growth at any phase.
Today I’m going to share these four essentials with you, so you can see if you’ve got all bases covered or if there’s one or two you still need to take care of.
Let’s dive right in.
Key #1 – A Clear, Straightforward Plan
The first key to creating and growing a business is getting out of overwhelming by following one, clear, straightforward plan.
If you feel like you’re spinning your wheels and bogged down by information overload, it’s a good indicator that you’re ready for a solid foundation so that you can do the right things, the right way, in the right order.
When I first started my business, I thought that all I needed to do to build a coaching business was to (1) have website and (2) coach people.
I did both of those things and got nowhere!
A good plan will not only tell you about business and marketing (which are the foundational concepts you must understand if you want to run a business!), it will also help you take action so that you can put your knowledge to use.
Sure, you may have spent thousands of hours (and dollars) on becoming great at what you do, but have you put in that same effort on becoming a great business owner?
It wasn’t until two years after quitting my job (and having my first business fail) that I realized I needed to learn about business to run a successful business.
Talk about a lightbulb moment!
When I invested time, energy, brainpower, and cash into creating a clear plan to run and market my business, that’s when things started to take off.
I can’t stress this first key enough. If you want to run a successful business, you need a clear plan to run and market your business!
Key #2 – Getting Expert Support
The second key to creating and growing a successful business is getting expert support.
Having a plan is essential, yet it always comes with questions! Questions like, “How do I do that for my unique business?”
This is where having expert support can really catapult your results. This is true whether you’re brand new or taking your business to the next level. Having expert eyes on your business to answer your questions helps you get results faster.
It’s that simple. If you want faster results, get expert support.
Key #3 – Being Part of a Community
If you’ve covered your first two bases, you’re on track. The third key is being part of a community.
As I tell my client, the community you join must be outside of your circle of _______ (coaches, crocheters, and candle-makers). You need to get out of your circle of peers to extend your networking and expand your reach… and find clients and customers!
When I was a new coach, I didn’t realize how important this was. I had been hanging around with coaches for two years, learning from and trying to model my business after other life coaches. In retrospect, this was a disaster!
There’s a lot of “group think” that happens in circles of the same types of business owners, and that’s definitely something you want to avoid. Plus, many of these coaches weren’t making much money, so modeling my business after theirs was simply absurd!
My eyes were opened when I took the leap to get out of my circle of coaches and join a broader entrepreneurial community. I learned from other business owners, saw other possibilities for how I could do my work in the world, and I got out of my tiny circle of copy cats.
The result? My network grew. My reach expanded. My eyes opened. And my business grew. A lot.
Joining a group of motivated entrepreneurs helps catapult you forward and keeps you motivated over the long-term.
Key #4 – Taking Action
Simply learning about business or learning to be a great _______ or joining a community doesn’t do anything for your business.
To see results, you must take action. Tweet that!

Hi Jenny,
As as well, really right on advice.
My #1 goal this year is to expand my reach. I was never part of a circle of coaches. I have a very small one of healers. I’ve been going outside of that for a long time. I’ve joined groups online to help with that.
I think it also applies to finding places where my potential customers meet online. Up until recently I’d been afraid of posting anything on linked-in. I was out of integrity. I was living two lives – afraid that they would intersect. I decided (finally) that I’m not going back to the corporate world. I told head hunters why and got lots of support. I’ll also be offering free-consults. I updated my linked-in profile. Now I feel free to start sharing what I do. I’ve moved into full commitment.
Can’t wait for B-School. Now I just have to choose the bonuses that are right for me. I have friends who didn’t engage with their peers. I find it unfortunate. It’s from the community that we learn. After 1.5 years I’m finally starting to realize how to engage with people online. It’s kind of cool!
Thanks Jenny,
Nathalie
