Launching a business is scary, and it comes with nearly endless unknowns. We often wonder if we’ll “make it” and what it actually takes to get there.
I had these same thoughts when I was first starting and a friend gave me the best advice I’ve ever heard. (And I still count on her today to set me straight.)
Today I want to share the advice she gave me and how I’ve put it into practice to create the incredible business I now enjoy. It just could be the key to your success, too.
Watch (or read) today’s 60 second challenge and discover the advice that really got my business moving.

Weeks after launching this business, I was talking with a friend, wondering if we going to “make it.”
She said the smartest thing: I think we need to find someone to help us. She was so right, but not for the reasons you might think. Keep Reading…

Hi Jenny,
I have the same belief: “I have to make money before I can spend it.” – Clearly there must be a balance though – where do you draw the line?
(I’m currently making decisions about investing so this blog comes at a good time for me…)
Jenny Shih says
Great question, Eva! First consider what I talked about in last week’s video challenge: https://jennyshih.com/2015/01/first-step-hitting-big-goals/ You basically want to figure out if you have a gap and you need to learn something (invest!)… or if you just need to take action.
Second, if that thought “I have to spend money to make money” makes you feel crappy, then it’s one worth looking at, getting curious about, and investigating deeper.

I think that as well sometimes. I am also thinking would a ceo being this task? ONe of my is people wont pay me for this or No one I know knows anyone that needs this type of coaching. Yep I will take the challenge. I have already been working on it.
I am a coach for people newly diagnosed with gluten intolerance and food allergies. I coach people who are newly diagnosed with gluten intolerance and/or food allergies, or if someone that is told to go on a gluten free diet. I guide them on getting started on the path living gluten and allergen free, including all the little intricate details that will keep a person sick or years; emotional state of mind related to gluten intolerance & food allergies; managing social situations; how to eat out, avoid contamination; and managing relationships. I take them from surviving to thriving.
The other thing I have changed is that I am an expert in this area. People will pay me for this service and I am worth what I ask to get paid.
Parijat says
Connie, I can answer your questions really easily. YES! Yes people will want to pay you for this and even stronger Yes! People need this! I love the work that you do and it seems invaluable to all the new families finding out their child has food allergies. this is fantastic and I’d love to refer people to you if you can share your contact info? I love this! I used to be REALLY stuck in the idea that “If I am doing what I love and having fun, I can’t charge people for it”. Coaching comes so naturally to me and feels like breathing, plus it is so incredibly rewarding and fun for me that at first it almost felt unethical to charge people money for my services when I was having such a great time doing it. Crazy, I know!! I came to terms with it by realizing the value of what I offer to my clients, seeing the massive transformation they have experienced (and realizing that no dollar amount is worth more than happiness, self confidence, and career/business satisfaction!) and also that my clients who invest in themselves are generally much more willing to put in the work compared to individuals who are not willing to make the investment. Thus, charging a fair amount for my services is actually helping much more than years ago when I used to do the same work for pennies.
Jenny Shih says
I love how you’ve worked this reframe on your crappy thinking, Valerie! LOVE IT!
Yes, you can charge for work your great at, and how awesome would it be if the whole world got paid to do work they love? Time to be a role model for that kind of world!
Christy Harvey says
Absolutely, Jenny! Taking MIWO with you has been the best investment I’ve made to date for bringing my online business to life. There’s so much MEAT in your class that I’m easily able to orient myself and keep taking action. Plus, love your 60 second video – fun!
Jenny Shih says
Woohooo!! You made my day with that lovely compliment, Christy. Thank you!!
I love watching kick-ass women like you take action and make big things happen. Keep it up!! xo

Crappy thinking: I can’t move forward until I finish what I have. I’ve invested and I struggle with follow-through. <–also crappy thinking! But since I'm desire mapping and focusing on things that make me feel good, this ties in nicely. Because taking action, making progress, and following through feel frickin' fantastic!
Jenny Shih says
I love that you know that you struggle with follow-through. Yes, it might be crappy thinking, and you can change it to “I work best with support and guidance.” BAM! Honor what your experience has been and focus on what you know gets results for you. Keep up the action-taking, progress-making, and following-through. I’m here to high-five you!!
