A few weeks ago we talked about the simple but obvious first step to getting more clients and filling your roster: telling people you exist!
Today I’m going to share with you the big turn-offs that repel clients so if you’re guilty of this you can shift it ASAP.
I’ve seen women shift this one thing and shift their entire business as a result. You can’t ignore this if you want to make money doing work you love.
Watch today’s 60 second challenge and so you can make sure you’re not sending clients running!
Are you accepting this week’s action challenge?

Most business owners want more clients, and there’s lots that goes into filling your roster.
Today I’m going to share one thing that actually pushes prospects away. The best part? It won’t add another thing to your to-do list! Keep Reading…
Emily McCrary says
Ugh, I am so guilty of the apology thing and I really need to start making a conscious effort to stop doing that. I also have this terrible habit of referring to what I sell as “my crappy art” which obviously leads to the problem of what that says about the person buying it.
Thanks for pointing this out, Jenny, it’s definitely a challenge I’m going to accept.
Jenny Shih says
Oh, good catch, Emily! That kind of energy definitely won’t help with getting clients. I love that you’re ready to catch it, shift it, and own the awesomeness of your work!
Claire says
ABSOLUTELY TRUE. I have a seminar I have scheduled for 18 April and while I have some enrolees, I need a few more to get it off the ground. Gotta be CONFIDENT and not DESPERATE! I have a great product, I just have to embody it 🙂
Thanks Jenny!
Jenny Shih says
Yes! Confident, not desperate. Spot on, Claire!
Amparo Millán says
Absolutely love your advices, Jenny!
I think the way to not to look needy with clients is “detach” from the result. You offer your service, your help, your knowledge and do not care if the client is accepting or not, just accept their YES or their NO.
Jenny Shih says
Nicely put. Detaching from the outcome is great. Share your services with as many people as possible by spreading the word as far and wide as you can, and what happens after that is out of your control 🙂
Lizzie says
Hi Jenny,
Thanks for the tip! But how do we practice being confident? How does our energy show up as not confident? In our copy, sales convos, and interactions with people? How does a new business owner show up as confident while still testing her ideas?
Thanks for the great post.
Jenny Shih says
It’s mostly about how you FEEL inside. Have you ever “just known” that someone was sad or angry or upset or felt some strong emotion? You just knew it?
The same thing is true for people sensing our confidence (or lack there of). You have to do the INSIDE work of believing in yourself, knowing that what you offer is good work.
You can still be confident when you’re trying something new. You likely aren’t testing an idea that you’ve never done before in any way. Even if you’ve never done your idea in the exact way you’re going to test it, you’ve likely tried it in some capacity and feel like you can do a good job. So own what you know you can deliver on and be confident that you’re doing your best to get the results you want.
This inside work is crucial to business success.
Lizzie says
Thanks so much, Jenny! Super helpful.
Nathalie says
Hi,
I stopped doing the sorry thing about a year ago. YEAH!!! It got easier when I started doing something that I thought was worthwhile (i.e. weight-loss). Even now that i’m shifting I don’t know exactly I know that I’m doing more of what I love, I stopped it altogether. now I come with excitement and confidence.
As for the grabby/needy thing…. that is so easier said than done especially when you got to eat. I once sold 17 books in 4 hours… it was the most fun I ever have. I wasn’t trying. I didn’t care who bought it. I was focused on the people that came through the door. It was a real delight. I try to bring that energy to potential clients, but I sometimes fall short.
Yes I take the challenge…
Love & Light,
Nathalie
Jenny Shih says
It is definitely easier said than done — and it’s still essential! 🙂
Remind yourself why you do the work you do; pull up testimonials or emails that past clients have sent you; get in touch with a friend who can remind you about the great work that you’re doing.
It’s not always easy, but it’s critical!
Alexis says
So true! I’ve caught myself in the needy energy a few times – yuck!
Stefanie says
Thank you for the transcript option! I have an aversion to videos so this is perfect!! 🙂
Jeda Pearl says
Love this: “Practice shifting into the confident women that you would want to do business with” – I’ll make sure to channel this energy when I feel like I’m not good enough. Perfectionism be gone!
Can I turn this into a picture quote Jenny?!
Jenny Shih says
So glad that resonated with you, Jeda! You are absolutely welcome to share it as a picture quote. Thank you for doing that! 🙂
connie curtis says
I do. I come across as sweet but not confident so I am working on this. I know what I do is important and sometimes I go back into being that needy person. I love this. The thing I see showing when I say what I do I coach people who are newly diagnosed with gluten intolerance and/or food allergies, or if someone is told to go on a gluten free diet. I guide them on getting started on the path living gluten and allergen free, including all the little intricate details that will keep a person sick for years; emotional state of mind related to gluten intolerance & food allergies; managing social situations; how to eat out, avoid contamination; and managing relationships.
Alternative doctors are coming up to me saying we need to talk because I see how you can help many of my patients and I dont have the time to do this anymore. Its so exciting.. I know who I am being it playing a part in this.. Thanks, Jenny
Mervi Emilia says
I’m often guilty with the apology energy. I’ve been working with it for a while now and getting slowly less apologetic. Good points! 🙂
Jenny Shih says
Love that awareness, Mervi. That’s where it all starts. Keep it up!
Sue Patterson says
I get caught up in being apologetic. I usually have my desperation in check. 😉
Thank you so much for the reminder! I just opened my Facebook page to the public, and I was a tad whiney, I think. Going back over to look at it now, hoping it was inside me and not coming through. But… energy being what it is… it probably did.
Thanks!!
Jenny Shih says
Great catch, Sue. Remember the value of what you have to share and own it when you post. Be the pro you know you are!
Rebecca says
Great post and excellent reminders! I love that you address our energy…it’s so important but also something that is often overlooked and not talked about. I’ve certainly been guilty of needy energy and even “invisible” energy (as in, don’t notice me/my business!) in the past, and I work with clients that are up against these same energy challenges.
I like Amparo’s suggestion to detach, and find that to be true. I’ve also found that focusing on seeing what I do as helping others and actually benefiting them (versus being a nuisance) is HUGELY helpful. It completely shifts the energy to one of contribution instead of trying to “get something” from them.
Thanks again for the great challenge, Jenny!
Jenny Shih says
You’re so right about the invisible energy — many new business owners are guilty of that one, too. Love the reframe on being helpful (not a bother), because really that’s what this work is all about. It’s about serving and helping.
Thanks for sharing here!
Christy Harvey says
Yes! I stay out of the needy, clingy energy by being totally clear that each of us brings our own “medicine,” or alchemy, to to the world. There is therefore no need for competition because the perfect clients find US instead of needing to pursue THEM. We simply need to put ourselves out there and available for them to connect with us.
Also, I love the transcript option – thanks!
Jenny Shih says
Yes — put ourselves out there and be available to connect. Totally right!
Trevia says
Great tip and I love the 60 seconds vid clips and the transcripts. The internet is WAY SLOW here in Saudi so sometimes that is the only option. I am doing a lot of thinking, working and visualizing where I what my business and life to go while enrolled in B-school. So I will challenge myself to exude the energy that the vision is already in place in my life. 🙂
Jenny Shih says
Excellent plan, Trevia!
Becky says
Thank you for the reminder, Jenny! I have two free calls this week and I need to do a little somethin’ somethin’ to boost my energy beforehand – dance party? Win the lotto? SOMETHING! Thanks – perfect timing!
Jenny Shih says
Know that you’ll rock your calls, share your work with the world, and impact the people you’re meant to. You can hustle and work hard without being desperate for it to work. I know you and how awesome you are. Focus on delivering your great work and let go of the rest. The more fun you have, the better the result. Sending good vibes your way!
