You know that little voice that sometimes tries to speak to you?
No, I’m not talking about the one that shouts mean shit and tells you you suck.
I’m talking about the one that whispers… very… quietly.
It says,
Slow down.
Take a break.
Go to bed.
Close the computer.
Get off your phone.
Go outside.
Take a nap.
Take a bath.
Have some fun.
STOP WORKING!
Have you heard that voice recently?
Or have you been ignoring her?
As a smart, driven woman, I know you have heard this voice at least once. If not dozens of times in a single day!
We all have this voice.
I have this voice.
But some days we don’t want to listen to it.
We want to PUSH. MAKE SHIT HAPPEN. GO-GO-GO.
And as you well know, I love to make shit happen.
But I also like my health. My mental and emotional well-being. And, well, my LIFE!
Do you? Do you like those things, too?
Or do you prefer stardom over balance?
Wealth over health?
Fans over fresh air?
Because you get to choose.
You can choose wealth over health and fans over fresh air. No one is stopping you. Certainly not me.
Except it doesn’t have to be a choice.
This, more than anything, is what I want you to understand.
You can have your cake and eat it too.
You can have stardom and balance. You can have wealth and health. You can have fans and fresh air.
If — and only if — that’s what you really, truly want.
How do you get both?
You honor that voice.
You might think that you know better than it does.
That working past midnight, day after day, will get you what you want.
That pushing harder and harder will make your dreams come true faster and faster.
That focusing on more-more-more will give you more-more-more.
But these are illusions.
They come from the world of impossible promises. Of myths. Of lies.
Because true wealth, true health, and true success doesn’t require sacrifice.
It doesn’t require you to only push and always work nose to the grindstone.
It’s like offering sugary pink frosting and sprinkles on a pile of shit.
Who cares about the frosting if it’s served on a pile shit?
I want frosting on a moist chocolate cupcake, thankyouverymuch.
You can have both. You can have it your way.
How?
You start by claiming what you want.
If you want millions more than anything, go after that. Refuse to sacrifice it.
If you want health and happiness more than anything, go after that. Refuse to sacrifice it.
OWN IT. Whatever IT is for you.
Believe it’s possible. With that kind of focus and clarity, getting what you want is only a matter of logistics.
Then honor that quiet voice. It is far wiser than you.
No matter how smart you are, I promise that voice is smarter. Way fucking smarter.
She knows how to get you there, wherever there is.
Sure, some days she’ll have you work HARD.
Other days she’ll tell you to sleep in and spend the morning in the sun with a cup of coffee and your journal.
Whatever she says, do that.
LISTEN TO HER.
Because when you do, you get the exact next instructions you need to get what you want.
Today she might say to rest. Or she might say to hurl yourself forward with the force of a meteorite.
Success without sacrifice means you get what you want — you can have your cake and eat it too.
But to have both, you have to be clear about what matters most.
And then listen to that goddamned voice. For heaven’s sake. Listen.
The End.
Your turn: Tell me what you want more than anything else. Tell me what you refuse to sacrifice.

Yes, yes, thankyou for saying this…everyone else tells me I’m not committed enough if I don’t work 24/7 like a crazy lady to get to that point of balance… this is totally at odds with what my little voice tells me… i say: work in the way that supports all of you not just 1 piece! And kick ass in that mode instead!
And thankyou for including the content in the email and not making me click through to your site to read your message – i appreciate one less click!
Jenny Shih says
You are not “not committed” — you are committed to what matters to you!
If the little voice is shaming you, that’s not THE RIGHT VOICE. There’s a quieter one underneath the loud, shaming one that knows your truth. It knows that you can and should rest. Listen to that voice.

I almost didn’t read this Jenny because I’m so busy right now and doing my best to stay calm in the midst of a lot of things pulling me including exciting ones like my daughter ready to give birth in a few weeks or any time now. Contractions have started but 30 minutes apart. Anyhow….couldn’t agree more with your blog. Thank you. Back to work 🙂 Karen

Ah, the irony! Glad you took time to read through (it was a quick read, after all). Wishing you and your daughter well! <3

I totally agree. I sometimes find myself in a fight between my family and my new business. I need both! I started my business for my family so does it make sense that I lose time with the whole reason I started the business in the first place? I think not, so I am working on my commitment to both. I can have my cake and eat it too! Thanks for the insight Jenny!
