Hi Jenny… I’m a new member of your Make It Work Online Workshop. I’m excited to be a member and have already reaped rewards. So here’s what happened when I drilled down on a specific niche.
In 2004 I wrote my first book about the crazy things new students do when taking ski lessons. I had never written a book, but was concerned about someone else beating me to the punch, so I went ahead and tackled the project. As I saw it, the biggest problem I faced was it being too “niched.” At best, there are only 12 million people who ski in the United States–either seriously or one time a year. The other limitation was the time frame. I guessed that the book would only sell during the winter. I was wrong on both counts.
After I launched the book, I was fortunate enough to have our local newspaper, The Vail Daily, publish excerpts from my book EVERY DAY for TWO WINTERS. Vail is one of the top destination ski resorts in the world, so we had visitors from all over the globe. People who read my stories (and book) took them back home to their friends. The Daily also had a website where they published the stories. To make a long story short, the stories WENT VIRAL. People from all over the world bought my book. I appeared on national TV, on radio shows and magazines. Other web sites from wedding planners to fishing guides “borrowed” my stories from the Daily’s website and put them on theirs. So, what’s the moral of the story?
Never be afraid of being TOO focused, or too NICHED. Consumers will make up their own minds whether or not to purchase your products or services. It’s better to follow your heart and do what you really love than to water it down to feel “safe.”
Thanks again for the great video. I’m going to go ahead and post it on the group’s site. You spurred me on to write a new article about this very subject. I’ll let you know when it’s done. Cheers!

I’ve known what business I want to start for years, but have always had a hard time niching down. I’ve watched countless videos and read even more articles, and they all said basically what you said in the beginning of your video. They ask questions like where do they live, car, what they drink etc… which always seemed ridiculous to me. I’ve also felt I didn’t want to leave certain people out I know I could help. Thank you so much for this video, finally an explanation of niches that makes perfect sense!
